Ten highly intelligent, erotically charged linked short stories set in a top New York law firm, Partners explores the intrigue, sexual politics, romance and misbehaviour that absorb alpha male and alpha female practitioners as much as winning the next client or the next case. With characters like Miriam, a distinguished judge with a provocative imagination, romantic Thomas, lordly Henry and non - conformist Millie, Partners exposes the private lives of lawyers as never seen before. In an era where erotic fiction often means pulp fiction, Partners brings intelligence and sophistication to the genre. Written with a knowing and elegant style by Melbourne based Harrison Young, the characters are passionate, human, flawed, and sexual. The female characters are smart, strong and empowered. This is not a tale of Cinderellas meeting their prince, but sassy consenting adults.

Partners Love is a Law unto Itself Harrison Young 9781459662940 Books Reviews

The Australian Financial Review implied that this was "Fifty Shades of Grey" by a very senior banker but this collection of short stories is much more than that. 50SOG's prose was as slack as its eroticism. On the other hand, "Partners" offers the literary quality of a Theroux or a Henry
with an insiders' sharp eye for Manhattan law firms and their sleeker, more lickerish denizens. The book's back story - who'd have thought a bank director living in Toorak could be the author? - adds to the appeal.

I loved this book. I heard Harrison Young on the radio and sought out both his books . I enjoyed his witty writing style, the characters were wonderfully developed and quirky enough to give us the readers a very enjoyable and satisfying journey. Ironically my husband has been a Managing Partner and likened "managing " his partners to 'herding cats". The weird and wonderful people who make up law firms and their sheer competitive natures certainly resonated with me. Wonderful read,
Partners is a good read. It comprises a number of short stories featuring the Partners of an establishment New York law firm. The writing is tight and pacey on the topic of the comings and goings on in the law firm. The first story features Alice, the newly appointed female partner who plots to get appreciation and standing amongst her male colleagues. The partners are coming to grips with the rise of females in their firm. The remaining stories feature partners in various professional and not so professional circumstances. The stories are salacious in part but kind at heart.
The themes that run through the stories come together like a whodunit (Agatha Christie springs to mind). The final chapter is particularly well crafted as the strands of the stories come together. The piece de resistance in this final chapter is the highly entertaining unraveling of the firms `no nepotism' policy. Times have caught up with the firm.
There is something for everyone in Partners.
I read about these stories in an article in the newspaper about the author, saying he was a finance person I think, but writing erotic fiction on the side. Don't be put off by that description. These are more romantic than erotic and definitely not explicit. But they are quirky and fun and leave you wanting more. I started expecting a bit of fun but discovered that they have a complexity and sensitivity that took me by surprise and I'd recommend them to anyone.
Partners is a series of linked short stories set in a law firm. While it is classified in the erotica/romance genre and has elements that would justify this categorisation, this misrepresents its strengths as fiction.

It is beautifully and tightly written. And we can see the author cares about language even in the musings of his characters, as in '...it came to him that these omnipresent semicolons could be understood as angels a head, and attached to the shoulder, a wing.' This attention to prose is not always central to the romance category, which tends to be sprawling and repetitive.

And if you love words who can resist the quotations from Donne ' But we by a love so much refined that our souls know not what it is...' and where they echo in the stories.

While it is a story of relationships played out through a milieu of a law firm, its unpicking of these relationships in the context of power in the workplace is compelling. Treading carefully through the power relationships is as important as the sexual and romantic encounters. The sex and romance is alive but more firmly in context than is sometimes the case.

Its title suggests relationships, but much of its strength comes from the inner monologue and voice of the characters as they make sense of their world. The observation of themselves and others is so acute at points that it caused in me a sharp intake of breath. Yet overall the authorial voice maintains an impression of kind and moderate judgment. Here are 'real' women and men, not overwhelmingly charismatic or dominated by heroine or hero. This is an ensemble in which each is finding their way. And that way has sex and romance and career and a careful eye on the others.
Before commenting on Partners Love is a law unto itself, by Harrison Young, let me vouch for the Book Description above. After reading Partners, I can't disagree with a word or implication in it. It says it and says it well.

Partners may remind you of the television shows, Suits and Mad Men along with a whiff of Fifty Shades of Grey, but it turns out there's more to it than that. Which is a lot already.

The eroticism of these ten stories is projected not by men but by women, their aggressive sexuality, their creative imaginations, their high professional standards adding nicely to what they want in bed.

There is a comfortable un-researched familiarity with a strong edge of inside knowledge to Mr. Young's fluid and sophisticated descriptions of the law firm where much of the action takes place and where the main characters all work. As their inter-actions tie together the ten stories, each story adds a layer to the reader's knowledge of the milieu and the society each new character must join.

There is also a humor and element of surprise to these stories, a quirky way of taking you past what you thought was going to happen into a more generous novelty, which goes well with the thoughtful and reflective mood of the collection.
There are many storytellers who cannot write and a few writers who appear to be in search of a story. Before I read Harrision's book on my Kindel I had just finished two books by James Salter, a renowned writer, storyteller and wordsmith. Harrison is in the same league.

Sex definitely plays a role in his stories as it does in most of our lives, with the possible exception of our parents. Ten stories turns out not to be enough. Harrison should be encouraged to write more. I intend to recommend the book to all of my friends and look forward to a hard cover version that I can give away. Please join me in spreading the word.
