You can group me in with one of those that rarely writes reviews. I only pipe up when its horridly bad, or exceptionally good. In this case, it is oh so good.I'm referring to all the books leading up to this one as a whole. I was hooked on the first book, and as soon as I finished it I was clicking to buy the next, and then repeat that with every book until I hit this one. Yes, I'll be buying the next in the series as well.
I read a bio about Ryk Brown on some random website. I read it because I recognized his name when I came across it. I was amazed to NOT SEE something I fully expected to see. His knowledge, or should I say, the way he expressed certain details, sounded like he KNEW those details first hand. I suppose I could have been transposing my own knowledge there, but the way he describes many things... for example, in one of the earlier books he describes a pilot getting out of the cockpit of his fighter. How he slid his foot down and searched for the 'flip panel' that his foot would push on opening it to give him a built in hidden step, one for each foot, as he climbed down. Reminded me of the F-4 Phantom. It has just that exact same thing. There is even a painted line as you look down to your feet as you climb out that you keep your toes on to be sure your foot hits the panel. The only thing missing was when putting the foot into the last step panel, a ladder would automatically drop the rest of the way to the ground, seeing as you just ran out of fuselage to climb down on. Also, his describing how Josh, one of the pilots, was strapping into his seat, checking his canopy, how the canopy closed, and then slid forward about to 'lock in place' as well as Josh, banging on the canopy to be sure it sealed. It was like being on the flightline again. Other things as well, that gave the story color, which Im sure most people will have missed, or thought nothing of it, wing walkers. Wing walkers are just maintenance guys helping out by walking along the aircraft as it is towed or taxis near anything. Be it another aircraft or going in or out of a hanger, wing walkers are there to be sure the craft doesn't hit anything unexpected. I half expected to have him having the crew do a FOD walk. Soon to be surprised as he has some individuals basically doing that to the fighters launch tubes later on. Brought a smile to my face. Little things that I'm sure most people would never thought twice about, but stands out to those of us that did those things.

Ep#12 "Rise of the Alliance The Frontiers Saga eBook Ryk Brown Reviews
If you haven't been reading this series you are really missing some of the best sci-fi available. Do yourself a huge favor and start with book one, you are lucky in a way as you will not have to wait for the next book for quite a while until of course you are waiting for Ep# 13, which I guarantee you will be sooner than you could have imagined. There is great character development that makes you feel like you know the lead characters. They are almost like old friends as you well get to know them and cheer for them, you will cry some and you will laugh out loud some. Each book is a treat and makes it hard waiting for the next one. I hope he continues with this story for a long time as I don't see how it could get old as this author has such an wonderful ability to tell such a detailed and very believable story that make you feel like you are right in the middle of it.
The entire episode is composed of destroying one battle platform. Previous techniques fail to work and alternate techniques also fail. it's one tenacious battle platform that has its sights set on destroying earth. Well, after destroying almost all of our assets, the job gets done. This episode had a few BS moments, meaning "why didn't you do this rather than that?" I really did think that Rachelle, with his foreign accent, and his off the wall confrontations was going to be determined to be a spy. Still liking this series.
About 20% of my way through this book, I had just about decided to stop reading the book, and not purchase any more Frontiers Saga volumes. I was tired of the endless excruciating detail of one 'space battle' after another where each count down to a 'jump' is documented with loving accuracy, and the good guys ships are almost, but not quite, destroyed. The characters had become cardboard cut-outs of themselves and had none of the charm they had in the very first volume.
I had begun to root for the Jung to put us all out of our misery. Frankly, after about the 5th book, things got kind of boring. the 6th thru 11th books should be edited down to 3 volumes.
But, since I paid 3 smackers for the thing I decided to finish it. I'm glad I did. After the first agonizing 'space battle' in this volume, things got better. The characters started behaving like people again. Good science fiction is always about the people and how they react to situations outside our experience.
Well, that, and new ideas. Ryk has finally come up with the interesting idea that the jump drive he invented for this universe will have a profound economic and cultural impact on the Alliance. And he is actually starting to take steps to illustrate that impact. He has introduced into his universe, the first tentative steps towards true interstellar trade, and mass migration of people.
What would be interesting is some scenes from the perspective of the Jung. How has their "old and slow" space travel shaped their empire? What drives their need to claim Earth as the center of their empire? Has the Alliance mis-read what the Jung's intentions are and have been all along?
Maybe what is needed at this point is that the "Frontiers Saga" series be ended, and a new "Alliance and Empire" series set in the same universe be started.
I don't like to write reviews with spoilers, so I'll do it with my opinions instead.
If you like to read "hard" SciFi, this saga is not for you. But if you like to read one of the best tales based on the possibilities that a couple of "hard" science fiction ideas may produce in a story, including the human aspects that such ideas generate, then the Frontiers Saga is very well worth reading.
In my experience, no story plot is perfect, so don't read this saga with perfectionism eyes. If you can read without taking too much analyzing the plot, you'll really enjoy it.
12 books so far, I ate them up and can't wait for number 13.
Congrats, Ryk, I loved it!
