This is a collection of four well written ,longish short stories originally published in the late 19th century.The modern writer Vernon Lee is most apt to remind you of is Robert Aickman.To be honest, she's not as good.Like Aickman she prizes ambiguity and sometimes slides into obscurity.Amour Dure is the best known story here but I don't think the best.The best is the strangely named Oke of Okehurst which has a depth and resonance to it the other stories lack.Dionea will really remind you of a fin de siecle Aickman.The last story , A Wicked Voice struck me as the weakest and least interesting.Lee(a woman by the way) was clearly learned and really reflects a sophisticated end of the century "decadence". She could write good prose and was imaginative but she's not a first rate talent.Product details

I love reading horror stories and found that a I shouldn't have read this one at night. NoT for the faint at heart.
I really enjoyed reading this while curled up with a blanket and cup of hot tea, very interresting read.kept me wanting more
If you like Victorian literature (particularly Sherlock Holmes, Rudyard Kipling or even Charlotte Bronte), or if you like anything gothic or uncanny, you should check out Vernon Lee (pseudonym for Violet Paget). Hauntings is full of lush detail, subdued but pervasive suspense, and intriguing but strange characters. Lee is a master of the fantastic, and Hauntings is a fun and compelling read.
I enjoy reading stories about the supernatural and this fit the bill! Great read if you are interested in hauntings.

You may want to take a quick look at Walter Pater & a bit of art history first, but I personally find Ms. Lee perfectly lucid, not something that can be said of all authours of the period. Her rather sharp wit is especially enjoyable, but seems to be overlooked by many modern readers.
I was interested mainly in reading one of the four stories contained in the collection Amour Dure. I had seen references to it over the years as a particularly effective ghost story and I couldn't turn it up in my local libraries, so I bought this version on . It turns out to be a CreateSpace "publication" -- someone transcribed the stories (which were published originally in the 1890s and so not subject to copyright) and used CreateSpace to create a print-on-demand paperback. There are no introduction or notes or information provided. Formatting is ... minimal, but not atrocious. Typos are minimal as well. At $6.70, I suppose the price is right. Amour Dure, by the way, is a pretty good ghost story of late-Victorian vintage, but hardly the greatest ever.
